As a university student, your list of top 5 priorities is unlikely to include keeping your home safe and secure. In fact, when you’re busy studying, and having plenty of fun, house security is often forgotten. With Home Office statistics indicating that 1 in 3 students are the victims of crime, it’s important to take your security seriously.

Avoid Obvious Student Digs

If you’re living in a residential area that isn’t exclusively student accommodation, it might be a good idea to avoid houses that are marked out as specifically for students. There may be student housing companies in your city that have a specific door colour or other markers that single you out. For burglars, this is a beacon that stands out showing them that there will be laptops and mobile phones inside.

Keys

Keep your door keys out of sight and away from doors and windows. There’s nothing a burglar loves more than to be able to let themselves in with your set of keys! If you have a set of spare keys, don’t leave them under the doormat or under a plant pot as this is the first place a thief will look. If you want to leave a spare set somewhere, find a neighbour you can trust to hold them for you.

Holiday Security

One of the great things about student houses, from the point of a thief, is the fact that students leave for a couple of weeks at a time for each half-term and holidays. Think about how to secure your home during this time.

  • Invest in light timers that’ll periodically switch on at set times, to give the impression that someone is in the house.
  • Make sure that all doors and windows are secure before you leave the house.
  • Take valuables home with you.
  • Make friends with your neighbours. Another pair of eyes is invaluable to the security of your home. Make sure to leave them your number and your landlord’s number, so they can get in contact if they see anything suspicious while you are away.
