If you’re running a small business, you’ll know that every penny counts. Being your own boss is rarely a simple process; margins can be tight, and fully appreciating that doing the little things in the correct way is vital to succeeding.

This is particularly true when it comes to security measures. A failure to incorporate strong and robust safety procedures not only puts your stock and business premises at risk, but it could also be the difference between your company prospering and failing.

The Pearson Cycles Example

If you’re a Londoner with a keen interest in travelling on two wheels, it’s very likely you’ll be aware of the cycling institution that is Pearson Cycles. Established in 1860, it is believed to be the UK’s oldest bicycle shop.

However, what you may not know is that towards the end of 2016 this shop suffered losses of around £10,000 after thieves managed to break through the store’s security systems and escape with two incredibly rare road bikes.

The incident was captured on CCTV and, though some shutters were in place at the time of the break-in, the thieves managed to comprehensively force their way into the store and escape, all within the space of five minutes.

The store was able to reopen for a few hours the following day, but owners say they lost ‘valuable trading hours’, and in all likelihood suffered additional financial losses due to people being unable to purchase goods in the lead-up to Christmas.

A Price to Pay

When it comes to considering essential running costs, security measures may not always feature highly on an SME owner’s agenda, but such thinking could have catastrophic results. How would you cope should your computers be stolen, for example? And would you be able to continue operating effectively should half of your stock be pilfered?
